Basketball Fundamentals

In today’s lesson we will be focusing on ‘cuts’ and ‘set moves’ for youth players.

Cuts- This is a fundamental of basketball and is used for creating space to receive a pass. The player cuts toward the basket (drawing the defender) and then cuts quickly back toward the ball to receive the pass (hence the name V Cut). This move is easy to learn and works very well with younger age groups.

Setting Screens- Screens are used to create space for a player. When setting a screen the player should maintain a stationary position with their feet shoulder width apart and their body perpendicular to the opposing player. Make sure that your hands are close to your body as you can be fouled if they are touching the player. A good idea is to hold your hands over your chest. This is of key importance as it protects you from being injured as in most cases the opposing player will run into you (the point of

screen). As shown in this image number 34 is creating the screen. Notice his body position and how his hands are protecting his body. As demonstrated, the player with the ball is able to curl around his team-mate, escaping his opponent. (Further information on screens will be available in later posts)
